How to Help
Watershed Committees
Each of Santa Barbara's creeks passes through various neighborhoods. Urban Creeks Council is seeking more representatives from each neighborhood within local watersheds. These representatives can form a creek committee with their neighbors to focus on their local section of creek. See where help is needed by viewing our Creek Contacts list.
Public Hearings
UCC frequently receives requests to review reports and development proposals concerning creeks. We have and will continue to participate in both City and County hearings regarding creek issues, as well as the occasional Coastal Commission hearing. More creek enthusiasts are needed to review and write letters on EIRs and to speak at public hearings in support of Urban Creeks' positions.
Creek Surveys
The original resources of our creeks prior to watershed-damaging activities need to be documented because government agencies rely heavily on written historical data. We need to know what plants and wildlife, and other resources exist. This vital information will give a base-line with which to gauge the potential impacts of new development, as well as the problems that need fixing. Pictures are very helpful!
Creek Clean-ups
UCC conducts yearly organized clean-ups of as many major creeks as possible, usually in the Fall, just before the rainy season. The work is fun and rewarding and can turn into a social gathering. We need volunteers to help organize such events as well as taking part in the cleanup. Anyone can organize smaller clean-up events in their neighborhood or with local school classes. We are happy to provide guidance.
Public Education
One of UCC's goals is to educate the public about our streams. We do this by setting up information tables or booths at public events, writing newsletters and other information sheets, speaking to school classes, and organizing informational forums. We need volunteers to help with any one of these tasks.
